Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple is popular as the smallest as well as the ancient rock-cut shrine in South India. As this Cave Temple is in the vicinity of the famous Kovalam Beach, quite a number of tourists who visit the beach are also attracted to this temple. The 18th-century rock-cut sculptures of this temple are so famous that it attracts history buffs. There is a one-celled shrine inside the granite cave which comprises of an independent sculpture of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthy along with incomplete sculptures of Siva and Parvathi on either side of the cell. The charm of the sculptures is truly mesmerizing, even though it is only half complete. The Archaeological Survey of India preserves this temple as a protected monument since 1965.
