Varkala, a suburban city of Trivandrum is known for its naturally beautiful setting with a unique geological feature, known among the geologists as the Varkala Formation. It is the only place in southern Kerala where one can find the cliffs adjacent to the Arabian Sea. Varkala is known for the 2018-years-old Janardana Swami Temple. And it is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India which is located near the Papanasam beach, whose holy waters is believed to wash away sins. Due to the presence of this shrine, Varkala is often referred to as the Dakshin Kashi (Benares of the South). The Papanasam Beach, also called Varkala Beach is a famous tourist as well as a pilgrim centre in Varkala. The Sivagiri Mutt is another place of attraction here
