Trivandrum Zoo and Museum is one of the oldest zoos in India which was established by the erstwhile King of Travancore, Maharaja Swati Thirunal in the year 1857 with the joint efforts of former Director of Thiruvananthapuram Observatory, Mr. J.A. Brown, and General Cullen who was the former British Resident. Trivandrum zoo is the oldest one in Asia. The main aim of establishing the Trivandrum Zoo and Museum is to provide a means of recreation for the public. The setting of the Zoo is amazingly beautiful that stretches across 55 acres of woodland dotted with lush green lawns and lakes. This zoo houses nearly 100 species of indigenous and exotic animals. Asiatic lion, Indian rhinoceros, lion-tailed macaque, Indian rhinoceros, Nilgiri langur, royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion and leopard, along with nine Asian elephants are the wild residents of this zoo.
