Standing tall amidst the bustling city of Trivandrum, Kerala, Kowdiar Palace whispers tales of a bygone era. It is one of the grandest and the beautiful palaces in Kerala. Celebrated for its historical importance and stunning beauty, Kowdiar Palace is now one of the most significant heritage structures in Trivandrum. Presently, the Kowdiar Palace serves as the official residence of the Travancore Royal Family.

The brainchild of Maharaja Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the last ruler of Travancore, Kowdiar Palace was originally constructed to commemorate the wedding of his sister, Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi with G.V. Raja. Unlike many opulent royal abodes, Kowdiar Palace reflects the unique tradition of the Travancore royal family – a preference for simplicity despite immense wealth.

Following the Constitutional Amendment of 1971, the palace holdings were divided among the descendants of the two Travancore Queens – Sethu Lakshmi Bayi and Sethu Parvathi Bayi. As Maharajah Chithira Thirunal belonged to the lineage of Sethu Parvathi Bayi, the Kowdiar Palace remains with their heirs.

Kowdiar Palace is a breathtaking blend of traditional Kerala and Dravidian architectural styles. The palace boasts 150 rooms, a wooden lift, and six majestic steeples, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into its construction. The red facade, intricate woodwork, and exquisite crystal chandeliers within the palace speak volumes about the royal family's refined taste. The serene and picturesque environment surrounding the palace adds to its charm, making it a visual treat for visitors.

While Kowdiar Palace remains a captivating landmark, it's crucial to remember that it's a private residence. Public access to the palace interiors is restricted. However, you can still appreciate its grandeur from the main gate.

Although entry is restricted, the palace's exterior view, surrounded by lush gardens, offers a glimpse into the royal lifestyle of the Travancore family. Its architectural brilliance and royal history continue to captivate visitors, making it a treasured piece of Kerala's cultural heritage.
