Surrounded by green foliage and housing more than 60 elephants, the Punnathur Kotta in Thrissur is one of the largest elephant sanctuaries in India. The Punnathur Kotta spreads across 11.5 acres of land and is known for housing the largest number of elephants in a small area of land. Jumbo elephants are the prime attraction of the Punnathur Kotta which are kept and taken care at this sanctuary, where the male elephants are trained to participate in major processions and daily temple rituals. And these elephants are owned by the Guruvayoor Temple. The Gajapooja (worshipping elephants) and Anayottu (feeding elephants) are the two main rituals observed every year at this sanctuary.
