Kerala Kalamandalam, established in 1930 by the revered Malayalam poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, stands as the most prestigious classical arts academy in Kerala. Situated in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur, this institution has played a pivotal role in reviving and promoting traditional dance forms such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Kudiyattam, Thullal, and Nangiarkoothu. The inception of Kerala Kalamandalam marked a significant turning point in the preservation of Kerala's classical performing arts. Vallathol Narayana Menon, along with his associate Manakkulam Mukundaraja, initiated this cultural renaissance to uplift the diminishing art forms. The academy was initially established in Kunnamkulam and later moved to its current location in Cheruthuruthy, beside the serene Bharathapuzha River. The academy also imparts knowledge in percussion instruments like Chenda, Maddalam, and Mizhavu, along with makeup and costuming techniques essential for these art forms.
