Arthunkal, a coastal town in Marari, Alleppey district of Kerala, is not just a serene seaside retreat but also a revered pilgrimage destination that draws hundreds of thousands of devotees from various faiths. The crown jewel of Arthunkal is the Arthunkal St. Andrew's Basilica, also known as St. Sebastian's International Shrine, the largest shrine of St. Sebastian in the world. This remarkable church is situated on the shores of the vast Arabian Sea, making it one of the oldest and most popular Christian pilgrimage centres in Kerala.
The Arthunkal Church, constructed by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, stands as a testament to historical grandeur and architectural brilliance. Known locally as Arthunkal Palli, the church features marvellous architecture with intricate interiors adorned with sculptures depicting biblical events.
One of the main attractions of Arthunkal is the annual feast of St. Sebastian, known as Arthunkal Perunnal or Makaram Perunnal. This grand celebration extends for two weeks in January, drawing devotees from across the state. The main day of the feast celebrated on January 20th, features a procession carrying the statue of St. Sebastian from the church to the beach and back. This event is a remarkable display of faith and devotion, with many devotees participating in the unique ritual of crawling on their knees, known as Urulunercha, from the beach to the church. The festival also marks the end of celebrations on January 27th, known as Ettamperunnal or 'the 8th day of the feast'.
Arthunkal Church is believed to possess miraculous powers, with many devotees visiting to seek healing from physical and mental ailments. Stories of recovery from serious illnesses and accidents contribute to the church's reputation as a place of divine intervention. Devotees often express their gratitude by offering small metal replicas of bows and arrows, a testament to their faith in St. Sebastian's healing powers.
Arthunkal Beach, also known as Fishermen's Beach, is another must-visit spot in Arthunkal, located near St. Sebastian’s Church. The beach is marked by a calm atmosphere and dotted with boats and fisher folk selling fresh and dried fish. It is an ideal location for a quiet retreat and to enjoy the serene coastal beauty. Apart from the church and the beach, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the historic town of Alleppey, known for its backwaters and houseboat cruises, and Marari Beach, famous for its tranquil environment and scenic beauty.
