Better known as "Kashi of South", Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is one of the most admirable shrines of Lord Mahadevan. The vast temple courtyard covers an area of about 8 acres. The four Gopuras - huge pillars, with the images of epic characters from Hindu Mythology is so adorable. The elephant pageant and the unique art performance are the most striking features of Vaikom Mahadeva Temple. It is one of the few temples which is honored by both the Shaivites and the Vaishnavaites. Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and here, the deity is fondly called “Vaikkathappan”. An important festival celebrated at this temple is "Vaikathashtami" which is one of the famous temple festivals in Kerala.
