- Literally, the word Poovar means the “Stream of Flowers”. This name was given to this village by Maharaja Marthanda Varma, who was the ruler of the state of Travancore.
- The sight of the red Kovala flowers floating on the Neyyar river looked as though a ruby red carpet floating on the waters which made the King utter suddenly in surprise “Poovar – the stream of flowers”.
- The historical records of the British say that the original name of Poovar was ‘Pokummoosapuram’ which was derived from the name of a Muslim merchant Pokku Moosa Maraikar.
- There is a mosque in Poovar which is believed to have been built by a Muslim preacher named Malik Deenar who visited Kerala in the 17th century.
