Poovar is an unspoilt and less-explored eco-tourism destination with picturesque and captivating beauty which is surrounded by sea, river, lake and backwaters. Poovar Beach is situated at the juncture of the beautiful Neyyar River that joins with the majestic Arabian Sea. Poovar Beach is a favourite haunt of those who love solitude. Highlights:

  • Literally, the word Poovar means the “Stream of Flowers”. This name was given to this village by Maharaja Marthanda Varma, who was the ruler of the state of Travancore.
  • The sight of the red Kovala flowers floating on the Neyyar river looked as though a ruby red carpet floating on the waters which made the King utter suddenly in surprise “Poovar – the stream of flowers”.
  • The historical records of the British say that the original name of Poovar was ‘Pokummoosapuram’ which was derived from the name of a Muslim merchant Pokku Moosa Maraikar.
  • There is a mosque in Poovar which is believed to have been built by a Muslim preacher named Malik Deenar who visited Kerala in the 17th century.

Parassala Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Poovar Beach which is situated at a distance of 15 Km. On arrival at the railway station, you can either hire a cab or board a bus to reach Poovar Beach.

By Bus:

Neyyattinkara KSRTC Bus Station is the nearest bus station to Poovar Beach which is situated at a distance of 11 Km.
