Nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats, on the banks of Periyar river, stands the ornithologist's paradise - Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, popularly known as Thattekad Bird Sanctuary. It is named after the famous scientist and ornithologist, Dr Salim Ali - known as the 'Bird Man of India'. According to him, this sanctuary is the ‘richest bird habitat in peninsular India’. Housing 270 avifauna species, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is a major attraction in Munnar. White-bellied blue flycatcher, Crimson-Throated Barbet, Black-winged Kite, Sunbird, Night Heron, Rufous Babbler, Wayanad laughing thrush, Malabar grey hornbill, and Bee-eater are some of the inhabitants of this sanctuary.
